La Mama Theatre
Chroma Group was honoured to contribute to the reconstruction of La Mama Theatre, a Melbourne cultural institution, following the fire that destroyed the original theatre in 2018.
The project provided an opportunity to restore, modernise, and expand the theatre’s facilities, with Chroma Group supporting the delivery of a renewed performance environment that honours the original building while introducing new operational spaces.
The completed spaces include a theatre, rehearsal room, informal gathering area, employee offices, ticket office, outdoor bar, and lobby, with a new administration building connected to the original theatre via an overhead boardwalk.
Brickwork was central to the project’s design and heritage response, including the careful brick-by-brick restoration of the original fireplace, striking new brickwork to the administration building, and the incorporation of salvaged original bricks into the rebuilt theatre fabric.
