La Mama Theatre

Chroma Group were honoured to contribute to the reconstruction of the Melbourne institution, La Mama Theatre, after it tragically had burned down in 2018.

The theatre took the opportunity to modernise, refurbish and add to their facilities throughout the re-build of the existing theatre building. Whilst honouring the existing features of the original building, a new admin building was constructed at the front, both of which are joined by an overhead boardwalk.

The spaces consist of a theatre, a rehearsal room, a ‘hang-out’ space, employee offices, ticket office and an outdoor bar and lobby area.

Brickwork was a main feature in this project, including the original fireplace from the theatre space being replaced brick by brick and restored in the original design, the striking brickwork to the exterior of the new building at the front, as well as the restoration of the existing building incorporating some of the original bricks.
